Updated Media Release - Fatal Crash

The Midland County Sheriff's Office is investigating a two vehicle fatal traffic crash that claimed the life of a 69 year old Sanford woman. The incident took place at the intersection of North Sturgeon Road and East Baker Road in Mills Township at approximately 7:06 pm on September 15, 2017.

Our investigation indicates that the driver, Sharon Miller, age 69 from Sanford, was driving her blue 2002 Ford Explorer, westbound on East Baker Road. It appears that Mrs. Miller disobeyed the stop and entered the intersection on North Sturgeon Road. Her vehicle was then struck by a northbound black 2005 GMC Sierra pickup truck that was being driven by Diane Espinoza, age 63 from Hope.

All the drivers appeared to be wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Both drivers were transported to Mid Michigan Medical Center in Midland due to their injuries. Mrs. Miller was later pronounced deceased.

Mrs. Espinoza was pronounced deceased at Mid Michigan Medical Center September 19, 2017.

While there is no evidence to indicate that alcohol or drugs may have been a factor in this crash, we are waiting for toxicology reports for a final determination. This report will be forwarded to the Midland County Prosecutor's office for review once it has been completed.

The Midland County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by Mills Township Fire Rescue, Larkin Township Fire Rescue and Mid Michigan EMS.
