Jail Project Updates

Midland County, in response to the community's request for more information, is pleased to debut this new Web Informational Service. This site is designed exclusively for new jail-related information and is driven by the Board of Commissioners' emphasis on keeping the public informed concerning key issues and developments in County Government. Please check this site for regular updates as the County proceeds with this pivotal project.

Jail Statistical Summary 2008

Inmates Boarded Out: 30.1 per month
New Admissions: 300.2 per month
Average Daily Population (incarcerated) :133
Average Length of Stay: 13.2 days
Average daily jail bed cost: $65.46
Number of persons enrolled in Community Corrections Programs: 590

Some 511 individuals successfully completed these rehabilitative programs, which include alcohol & drug abuse treatment, criminal sexual conduct therapy and employment/education training, among other programs.

Jail bed days saved by participation in Community Corrections Programs: 7,215, which is equal to 19.8 jail beds filled 365 days a year. These alternatives to incarceration saved the County $472,294 in 2008 alone.

The year 2008 saw 485 felony cases sentenced in 42nd Circuit Court. Of those, 62 or 12.8% of these defendants were sent to prison. A disturbing trend, notes Midland County Prosecuting Attorney Michael Carpenter, is the number of younger people getting entangled in criminal activity. In April of 2008, Carpenter reported that of 24% of felony convictions in the Midland County Courts involved teenagers.
